"The
ICOM
Process"
Once we’ve agreed on the estimate and the price, it’s time to
move forward. The first step to almost all of our projects is
to create a “look/feel workup” based on discussions we’ve had
about your project and based on our signed estimate.
The look/feel workup is literally a picture of what your
website will look like when finished. It looks just like your
site, but it isn’t functional and it typically doesn’t include
moving elements, animation, or anything else interactive.
Think of it as a concept car – pretty on the outside, not very
functional on the inside.
We use the look/feel workup to solicit feedback from you, the
client. It gives you an opportunity to give specific comments
regarding colors, layout, design, and even some of the content
for the site. The workup gives ICOM and you something concrete
to discuss, and even if you hate it (this is okay) the
comments you provide will help us come up with something more
to your tastes as we progress.
We’ve actually been asked the question, “Can I tell you if I
don’t like it?” The answer is, “Of course!” This doesn’t
usually happen, but we want you to be pleased with your new
site, and if it’s not satisfactory, we want to know.
Typically, we solicit feedback on the workup for a relatively
short period of time until you’re happy with what the site
will ultimately look like. We also use this as an opportunity
to suggest certain design elements and features that may be
useful or even essential on your site.
Once the look/feel workup is approved, we progress directly
into designing the site. During this phase of design, we’ll
need content and information from you. By “content” I mean
your passengers – the information, ideas, and graphics or
images you plan to make available to the outside world.
We like to have content emailed to us, and we typically like
to break it up by website page. Your website will probably
include several pages, each of which will be a different
category of information. As you make information available to
us, we build the pages and make them available for you to view
in our client review area – a section of our website where
partially completed websites reside for client perusal and
approval.
The quicker you provide information to us, the quicker we are
able to finish your site. Nine times out of ten, projects slow
and even stop because we don’t have any information to put on
the site. Without passengers, your new car sits empty in the
driveway. Without content, your website sits empty in our
client review area, accomplishing nothing for your business.
