"Where Will
My Website Live?"
Once it’s built, your website still needs to live somewhere on
the internet. There are a couple of ways to give your website
a nice home:
1.) The first and most obvious choice is to buy a domain name.
This is your standard dot-com, dot-org, or what have you. ICOM
will help you to do this, and we can advise you about picking
a domain name that will help your business, not hurt it. In
general, very long domain names, names that are hard to spell,
or names that are difficult to remember are not the best
choices.
Once you buy a domain name, you need to get hosting space
where the files of your website can reside. We recommend
hosting your site with ICOM. If you ever have a problem with
your site, we’ll be able to quickly track down the issue and
get it fixed instead of spending hours on the phone with an
outside hosting company, wasting time and money attempting to
resolve the issue.
2.) ICOM can also provide you with your own space on
CliftonPark.org (our community resource center) at a
personalized location like
www.cliftonpark.org/yourwebaddress. Instead of a dot-com,
you’ll provide this address in your marketing materials and
advertisements. This is a cost-effective way to achieve a web
presence without committing to hosting expenses and domain
name registration if you’re not ready to.
